as strange as it is, Cukui means alot to me because of the parallels to my own life- my parents immigrated to hawaii when they were young and spent a good amount of time on the island. when i came around they made sure that they instilled in me the idealisms of hawaiian culture, while keeping it going in san jose. a brand founded in 2008 (about the same time this blog popped up) by Orly Locquiao of Humble beginnings tattoo and Shortyfatz' own Sammy Rodriguez, Cukui blends latin american, polynesian and san josean (vietnamese, latin, filipino...GO SHARKS.) culture together- which is basically the story of my life. if youre ever in san jose and want to get a good representation of what it's all about, go visit their brand new shop at 229 Jackson St, San Jose, CA 95122. it's around the corner from shortyfatz' base as well as phil wood!
